This 12″ x 12″ photograph features a Magical Register, the foundation for creating Daoist Talismans and conducting the Magical Arts.
Fu or Shenfu are Daoist Talismans mainly used to summon and invoke ghosts and cast spells in order to control the evil spirits. The foundation for creating Daoist Talismans and conducting the Magical Arts are recorded in simplified books called Registers, Magical Registers or Treasure Registers (素書 Sushu). As is the case with Western grimoires, a Register begins with the oath of its owner followed by the main body containing the names and offices of the spirits together with the corresponding talismans, diagrams, and divine images. The writs are exceptionally strange and cannot be recognized by ordinary people. At the same time, they assure a man has become a Daoist and symbolizes his right to practice the magical arts and control the divine officers on the talismans.
Daoist Talismans are considered the sacred writ that can invoke spirits and control the ghosts. According to Daoist scriptures, a talisman is a condensation of the clouds in the sky. It is written that, the talisman is originally condensed in the sky. The Supreme Perfection faced upward, wrote the heavenly writings, differentiated the directions, and distinguished pictures and drawings from the writings of the talismans.” Later, the Supreme Venerable Sovereign ( 太上老君 Taishang Laojun ) and other immortals imparted them to this world.
